# First Co-Packing Sampling: How to Prepare

Many new brands tell the factory "I want a premium cat food" and expect a perfect sample. Here is how to get it right the first time.

Before sampling

1. A clear brief

Do not say "premium cat food." Specify:

  • Target pet and life stage
  • Meat content range
  • Process (extrusion/baked/fresh/freeze-dried)
  • Target retail price and cost band
  • Package size
  • Competitor reference (link or photo)

2. Change one variable at a time

Do not swap protein, process, and packaging simultaneously. This way you know what worked.

3. Do your own palatability testing

Internal factory tests are not enough. Feed your own pets, recruit target users, collect specific feedback.

How many rounds?

| Round | Purpose | Adjust |

|-------|---------|--------|

| 1 | Base formula | Meat %, kibble size, taste |

| 2 | Fine tune | Texture, smell, nutrients |

| 3 | Finalize | Packaging compatibility, shelf life |

Typically 2-3 rounds. More than 5 means the brief is misaligned.

Cost and timing

  • Sampling fee: $70-$420 depending on process
  • Lead time: 7-15 days per round
  • Sample size: 5-20 kg
  • Fee usually credited to first production order

Common pitfalls

1. Vague brief

2. Changing too many variables at once

3. Skipping your own palatability test

4. No NDA signed

5. No nutrient testing on samples

If you are launching your first pet food brand, Mixiaoqi pet food OEM/ODM can start with a simple formula and walk you through sampling to production.
